Splint therapy can impact the neural function of brain

Splint therapy can impact the neural function of brain regions in TMD patients, accompanied by improved clinical symptoms, suggesting a central mechanism underlying the therapeutic effects of splint therapy
MRI research provides important novel insights into the altered neural manifestations underlying chronic pain in TMD.
Alterations in the trigemino-thalamo-cortical pathway
Alterations in the trigeminal nerve root
Alterations in the brainstem
Alterations in the thalamus and S1
Alterations in cortical regions
Altered lateral and medial pain systems
Altered DMN and pain modulation
Alterations in the motor system
Altered brain activations in response to mechanical stimuli

Delta waves appear to have decreased overall, reducing brain fatigue. Theta power also decreased in the frontal lobe, which is believed to have alleviated the deterioration of the frontal lobe brain function. The increase in alpha waves remains but shows a reduced pattern compared to before. Beta waves are the most normalized than before and show a great improvement in anxiety patterns.
